A popular article is something you could find in a newspaper or magazine. It uses easy-to-understand wording, often has photographs included, does not always have an author listed, and is not usually too long.
A scholarly article is something you would find in an academic journal. There is always an author listed (or more) and these articles tend to be peer-reviewed, which means it has been approved by fellow scholars before being published. Scholarly articles tend to be longer and they will always have references throughout and at the end of the article.
